Statue of Granduca Cosimo III de' Medici

The monumental portrait of the Grand Duke was commissioned by Cardinal Flavio Chigi for his Palazzo Chigi in 1680’s to express his gratitude for being granted the title of Marchese of San Quirico. The monumental sculpture was placed in the center of the Horti Leonini in the 1950’s to protect it when the Palazzo Chigi was damaged from bombing during WWII. As one can see from this photo, it was never meant to be located in the Horti Leonini and dominate the center.
